Career coaching can actually be a blend of coaching and consulting. What is the difference? A consultant not only brings their specific knowledge to the table, but can sometimes can be more advisory than collaborative.

As a career “consultant”, If you need guidance in job-hunting, then we will work on specific job-hunting skills. I will recommend proven strategies and tasks that have been proven to work.

However, as a coach, we will be collaborative with that strategy menu, and figure out what will actually work best for your personality and for your schedule.

This might be painful news for you — it is for some — but part of your work as a job-hunter is going to involve reaching out to people. This makes some of us cringe. But as a coach, we will discuss the best communication strategies and tactics, and we will even role-play as needed. It is not as painful when you have someone in the trenches with you.

You will also learn how to market yourself successfully in your cover letter, your resume, and in your interview. You’ll learn how to make sure your resume is one that is seen.

And, you will learn statistically what to expect, when you are doing well, and when the data suggests you need to update your tactics.

What if you don’t know what you want? If you are not certain what you want to do, then I may recommend certain assessments, or types of exploratory discussions. There are a number of interesting angles to explore when looking at the career that fits you best, and I also have a course workbook I have written on the topic that many have found helpful.

So that is what you can expect when you seek career coaching –expertise in techniques that work, and a partner in the endeavor to walk with you in the process.
